Influence of Al-TCB Seed Alloy on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of ZL302 Alloy

Abstract: Al-Mg alloys have high specific strength, good corrosion resistance and weldability and are very competitive materials in theaerospace, high-speed train, marine and other fields in the future.The design of the strength and plasticity of the alloy is one of the focuses in the industry. In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZL302 aluminum alloy were regulated by adding Al-TCB seed alloy. The grain morphology, grain size, microstructure and mechanical properties of ZL302 were analysed by OM, TEM and universal testing machine. The results show that the Al-TCB seed alloy exhibits a better grain refinement effect on the ZL302 alloy compared with the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy. The average grain size of ZL302 can be refined from millimeters to 67.5 μm by adding Al-TCB seed alloy, and dendrites transform into equiaxed grains in the microstructure. After the addition of 1%(mass fraction) Al-TCB seed alloy, the tensile strength and elongation of the ZL302 alloy increase from 208.0 MPa and 5.8% to 218.8 MPa and 9.7%, respectively. Therefore, Al-TCB seed alloys can improve mechanical properties by reducing the grain size of ZL302.
